If anyone would like to contribute in this area, then that'd be great. I've put together a zip of examples to follow. The main type of graphic is a transparent PNG file. The rearmost starfields need only be a simple bmp. Each object is scaled relative to it's type, so all stars must have the same radius and dimension in the file - ie 256X256. All planets are 512X512.

The stars I'm getting from SOHO at the moment. Planets I'm making in paint shop pro with the lunarcell plugin. I've got the 1701 covered but I could do with a multitude of others - a set of Romulan ships and then any others you can think of - Gorn, Vulcan etc. I could do with lots of planets too - gas giants and other odd looking planets, all scaled exactly at the example and at 512X512 as a transparent PNG.

If you need a tutorial on how to make a decent looking transparent star, just ask.

Stars are stars and as long as I have a few dozen that should be ok, but I'd rather not have the planets look repetitive so the more the merrier! If you want to talk about how to make good planets, get me on IM.

The examples given are all presented in the attached image - a starfield, 2 stars , a planet, 4 ships and a nebula.

It's a little soon to talk about modding it to SW or B5, but once the graphics theme is set in stone, then someone can begin a conversion to other universes, at least graphically.

Umm, why are planets bigger than stars?

Unless it's something with game mechanics i.e. planets need to the that big to ships to use them, then IMO I think it should be reversed for added realism.

Anyway, just my 5 cents :D

It's for the internals of the game. As planets will have a central role as bases, places to find objects and missions etc, I need a higher res graphic so that I can display the planet in a big window for 'sensor scans' or somesuch. Stars won't get such a zoomed in view because they don't have a starring role. If you look at any of the preview pics you'll see the planets are rendered smaller than stars in the game view.

Oh hi. Been a while since we talked. This still alive? In any case, I promised you some graphical goodness and never got around to it. Did even collect a whole lot of reference and such. If ye still need me, just yell.

Oh and might as well give you the thing I got finished, a Romulan Garuda class heavy Bird of Prey. Not sure if PS messed up TGA alpha channels again, but meh.

lol, I should check my own forums more often. After a looong break I'm back working on it again (see longer new thread).

That is an excellent BOP there, and if you don't mind I'll include it as a texture in the next build :)

And if there are any more, try saving as PNG. That should solve any alpha woes.

Here's a reminder of the playable ships:

...and a zip of the playable ships as templates should anyone want to contribute to the graphics.
