Maps and Backgrounds

Postby TheOneNamedViper » Wed Apr 02, 2008 8:01 pm

Since I've made some new backgrounds for our maps to use, I figured I might as well make a map to go along with them. It's still a WIP. The center of the map is blatantly copied from our Jupiter map (which in itself is a copy). I've submitted it to SVN.

The background is based on Epsilon Eridani, the system in which Babylon 5 was built, so that's the name of the map too.

The map is meant as a 2v2 team map, though it's fine for a 1v1 or a 2v1 as well.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Here's a list of the maps I've added so far, all in the area capture gametype:

Arcata 7, 3P & 6P: Set in the smoldering remains of a planet blown up by the Vorlons, up to 3 or 6 players battle it out for the resources contained in the field. One Station control point for each player, one midway between each player, and a center point granting access to firstones build options.

Epsilon Eridani, 4P: 7 control points. A RU generating station for each player, and three points midway between the two teams, the center one being a research station granting access to firstones build options (currently only the Omega-X for EA), the two others being ship spawn points, giving you firstones ships on a timer.

Hostilities Beginning, 2P: 9 control points. Quite simply an area capture version of Hostilities End from the vanilla game. In keeping with the Babylon 5 theme, I've changed the background of this one to be the Orion Nebula.

Hyperspace, 4P: 7 control points. A carbon copy of Epsilon Eridani, but without the stations. Made as a test of the appearance of hyperspace as portrayed by ingame nebulas.

Lost Tales, 6P: This one was made with the sole purpose of getting some vertical gameplay in. Made for 3v3 teams, but not entirely done yet. It has a cp for each player, and three points spaced out between the two teams. One research station for each team, and a ship spawn in the center to fight over.

Tree of Life, 5P: Converted from HW1 with added control points. One station per player, with 5 small RU generating control points near the center. One additional RU point and a Station point lead the way to both the top and the bottom where you can find two additional RU points and a Research station.

Zagros 7, 2P: a 1v1 map with a station near each start point, and ru generating points in the nebula arms leading to the middle. It has a combined ship spawn and research point on each side of the central asteroid field and another station where the nebula arms meet the asteroid field.

Here's a list of the backgrounds made for the mod so far and their current status:

blue_nebula, is based on Epsilon Eridani, home system of the Babylon 5 station.
Status:
Rendering: done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

pink_nebula, is loosely based on screenshots from an episode of Babylon 5. I currently don't know what system it's supposed to be from.
Status:
Rendering: done
Stars: done
Lighting: done, I may tone down the lensflares a bit at a later date.

lost_tales, is based on the system in which a battle against the Centauri takes place in a possible future in the Lost Tales movie. Its name is never mentioned.
Status:
Rendering: done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

outskirts, is based on the lost_tales background. This one is set just outside the nebula, so the light is a little dimmer and it doesn't take up as much of the sky.
Status:
Rendering: done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

deep_space, is also based on lost_tales. In this one, the nebula can only be seen in the distance, so the lighting is rather dark to give the same effect as the map the Homeworld2 2.0 mod used for their youtube video.
Status:
Rendering: done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

yellow_nebula, is based on Zagros 7 and rendered by CnlPepper.
Status:
Rendering:done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

hyperspace, a completely black background with sharp red lighting. It's meant to be used with a level filled with a red nebula to give the effect of B5 hyperspace.
Status:
Rendering:done
Stars: none, and done.
Lighting: done

orion_nebula, based on an image of the real nebula.
Status:
Rendering:done
Stars: done
Lighting: done

eagle_nebula, based on several images of the real nebula.
Status:
Rendering: 99%, I'm happy with how it looks now, but the polycount may still be a bit too high.
Stars: not started yet
Lighting: not started yet

Hmm, it shouldn't end up looking like that. Can you post the picture (.tga) you used with HW2BgBuilder to get that?

The Control Point capture does work! :) Use the Shuttle or Lintira.

I know, but re-capture is a bit bugged, since it just keeps respawning the enemy station 5 seconds later. Maybe add a check for if enemy ships are still in the area before respawning it.
