How was HW2's warp effect done?

'Lo, all. New to the boards.

I'm a programmer, and currently trying to create a simple 3D space sim for shits and grins. (If anyone feels like designing a HUD and some ships, send me an E-Mail). I love the HW2 warp effect, but for the life of me, can't figure out how they did it. Can anyone give me some insight here?
