It's not rectangular, it's a wedge, like a Star Destroyer. I like McQuarrie's ship.

To be quick and simple, all that really needs doing is the replacement of the nacells with TOS versions, and replacement of the saucer with the one from the constitution. Obviously you'd want to do more but I'm just saying it won't take much to trekify the ship.

So, if we're making the "canon" version, we don't have a lot of room to make sweeping changes. Of course, we don't necessarily have to make the "canon" version... ;)
