Waaah! And why do the ships' engines and weapons make sound! SPACE IS A VACUUM! SOUND CAN'T TRAVEL IN A VACUUM!

And wouldn't it most economical to make ships that are sherical, since they enclose the maximum volume per unit of surface area?

And why are there so many humanoid-aliens that breathe O2/N2?

And how is it that they don't use money in the Federation?

/rant :D

Well, I can answer the last question. They dont use money b/c money isn't the driving force that motivates people to work anymore.

The answer to the others is this: If there wasn't sound in space in the series and movies, it would be REALLY boring. Ships aren't spherical because spheres are boring. And everyone breaths N2/02 because we humans say "breath this or die."

In other words, the directors and producers BS just about every fact on the "physics" of their show so that it looks good.

Then again, ST is much more "realistic" in terms of what we know about physics than compared to, say, Star Wars.

I don't know about THAT... I mean, any SF genre that considers the parsec a unit of time is okay in my book...

SAAB. That was a really neat show. I only saw the pilot, but I was in the middle of moving when it was on, so I never got to watch it. To bad its ratings were so bad.

The sound guys put microphones on the hulls of all the ships.

Federation ships are warp-dynamic. That's like aerodynamic, but with warp, not air.

Billions of years ago, an advanced humanoid race came through and said, "It looks like there could be life on all these planets at some point. Let's mess with some primordial genetics to encourage this life to evolve to look like us!"

Well, I think they did that humandoid thing because all the aliens had 2 arms, 2 legs, 2 eyes, one mouth....everyone was the same, except mabye their head was a little different and they had different skin. I mean, how....biased. For all we know, we could be the wierd looking ones while all the other aliens look the same.

That's one thing I liked about Farscape... they would use cool-looking puppets for aliens. B5 had cool aliens, too. I've always suspected that if/when it's encountered, ET will be so different from us that we may not even recognize him as being alive.

Certain sound waves can and do travel through space as it is not a complete vacuum:

Ya, true, but I don't think sound would be on the same level as they show in Star Trek.
