What say you?

Post by korunks » Mon Dec 14, 2009 6:05 pm

I am not sure if I will be remembered, but I use to frequent these forums often(at least often to my way of seeing it) and was wondering if some one(myself) was to actually begin overhauling and possibly updating the Homeworld source would any in this community still be interested in modding it? Since I last haunted these forums I have acquired some sort of degree in Software engineering and while I suxx0rs at modding I am fairly decent with game code. I am looking into the source code to see what may be accomplished. What say you?

Well, there are already others working on the source code. I think your best bet would be to team up with them so you don't both do the same work. I don't have a link to their pages, but if you ask around on relicnews, you should be able to find them.

I am aware there are others working on the source code, but I am not certain they would be sensitive to the specific "needs/wants" of this community, This community being one of the few reason I still even bother playing Homeworld at all.

I see. In any case, I was thinking along the line of you getting permission to build off the work they've already done, so that you don't have to start from scratch. I've seen too many ambitious one-person mods fail due to lack of manpower.

Anyway, to answer your original question, the modding community in general has gotten pretty good at modding HW2, so a revamped HW1 engine would have to offer specific benefits over that to be interesting.

For one, support for DX9 level graphics is a minimum, I imagine, like specular maps and bump maps to the same level now possible in HW2 via CnlPeppers new shaders.

Another specific request would be support for phaser strip type weapons, or better yet, the ability to completely script weapon effects, including dynamically controlling what point the weapon fires from.

And apart from that, I'd love to see better cloaking effects. The ones in the game now are simple on/off effects, and HW2 only has fading out IIRC.
A proper shimmering effect as a ship cloaks would be welcome. The same effect could be use for Shadow hyperspace effects in a Babylon 5 mod.

The main thing that kept people from modding HW back in the day was poor modding tools. HWSE goes a long way towards it, but a better tool for animating things would be welcome, as would a visual effects tool so you can preview the effects you've made without starting the game up.
