Outside Context Problem. Or maybe I'm making that up. I've only heard about the books; I haven't read them.

The only one I've read takes place almost entirely outside the Culture... Image

You see robocop?????!!!!!!
I didn't!
The OCP is from the Culture novel Excession, read it some time, it is good.
The Avatar, perhaps I should have said Shrike, is from Hyperion.
Which have you read pierce? Inversions?
It is technically in the cultureverse, the little weapon the doctor uses is a knife missile, handy little things. And what a surprise I had finding a reference to one in an earlier regfic book by Iain Banks.

The acronym "OCP" is what makes us think Robocop, as it featured prominently... Image

I wondered if you were thinking Shrike when you said Avatar, but mostly chalked it up to having just reread the Hyperion series. Image

And the Culture book I read was "Player of Games," which mostly takes place on a planet well outside the Culture.

Oh, well I thought that writing Outer Context Problem would make that clear.
Player of Games was my first Iain Banks novel too. Though to date I've read seven of his novels, read the bridge sometime too.

Well, the thing is, if you'd just put "Outside Context Problem," nobody would even have made the Robocop "OCP" connection. Putting the initials there is what trips that particular reference... Image

True but then I like acronyming things.
Besides I doubt that the OCP corp in Robocop ever used its advanced technology to suddenly pop out of no where and completely overrun the philosophical and scientific beliefs as well as over run all of human society, which would be a real OCP.

Now, now, the politically correct term is "science-fictionally challenged." Image
