R2d2

Post by Crook » Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:05 pm

There's never any posts here, so here's one to break the rule - R2D2. Still very much a WIP but it's getting there slowly.

As an aside - this is the second thread that I've titled 'R2D2' and the result is 'R2d2'. Anyone have any idea why that is? It will allow R2 D2 but not R2D2....

That one is simple: it's to avoid posts with the "cruise control for cool" aka. caps lock.

Nice model so far, btw.

Looks like a sophisticated trash canister without the legs! :D

Haha, sorry couldn't resist. Yes, very nice, something a lowly being like me could only hope to aspire too in modeling and texturing.

And yes, that capslock blocker is tits, IMO.

Some more progress. The blue one has all the blue head sections redone and are better rounded at the edges now. The red one is showing the next stage on the body - slightly offsetting some sections to give it a more real look. I'll also be modelling in some dents I think as time goes by but this is just the beginning of what will probably end up being several passes to add dents, nicks and the like into the model. There's still a considerable amount of full proper modeling work to be done yet so I'm not going overboard with this yet but already I think it looks a little more real as the perfect lines are removed from the model.

I'm still unhappy with the reflections I'm getting from the silver surface, so I may take a break to try to get a fully lit scene up and working at some point. Thsi currently has raytraced reflections on and the surfaces to reflect have an HDRI applied to it as a spherical map. I'm happy with the white of the body which is looking like gloss painted metal at the moment but the silver is just far too noisy.

Looks sweet.

May I suggest you do two versions? One fresh off the assembly line, and the other like you planned with dents, dings, etc.

Yep that'll have to be done as the dents and nicks is part of making it into R2D2 (along with weathering) but I'll have to have a stock clean version to make into other R2 units. If I still have the motivation I'll make an R5 head for it too.

The surfacing is coming along well I think.

I like the new silver dome texture you put on it. Huge improvement IMO.

A leg and much more surface tweaking, this is beginning to look ok to me.
