I've been working on my portfolio material still but I've been entertaining myself too...nothing perverted! I've been adjusting and 'improving' the Freespace 2 mod for HW. Just some fairly minor adjustments but I think I've done alright with it so far. So far there is improved AI, ship stats, ship balancing, nav light engines, corrected mex stats (all mex's still in VME but with some proper collision detection this time), nearly completely different weapon layouts (more like FS2 itself, the Terran Heavy Cruiser, the 'Colossus', now has something like 63 weapon points), no Y-axis movements (so that players have to care for each cap-ship and move them into good positions), vastly improved fighters (better weapon layout like the FS2 game and nav light engines), proper scalling, modified Dark Star weapon pack for my version of the FS2 Hw mod (looks rather nifty) and I've been thinking of replacing the P1 race with the NTF and the P2 race with some Vasudan rebels. I might not get round to all this however due to me getting rather pissed off with texture curruption causing the game to simply crash to windows, obviously a slightly dodgy textures.ll file which I just can't fix.

Since the original FS2 mod was not mine, I'm not sure I can release this to everyone else but here some screenies...

NTF Iceni firing at a bastion class carrier (improved weapon layout and nav light engines)...

Improved/corrected collision detection and modified weapons pack...

Smoothed, re-mexed, nav-light engine fighters...

And finally, the colossus getting a bit pissed...

I've got loads more screenies but I can't be bothered right now. If there is anyone interested in this tweaked version and can even help with the crashing problem, let me know.

Mr Gloomy - still keeping myself busy

P.S. this is a repeat topic of sorts but don't worry your pretty little heads about that!

I'm interested. When does it crash exactly?

Well, I've managed to prevent the crashing for now. It seems that the original FS2 Terran heavy corvette file made the game crash...some sort of error in conjunction with the texture.ll file!?! I've had to remove that particular model and replaced it with a Vasudan fighter (which was originally placed as the cloakgenerator in the original FS2 HW mod release of long ago), which seems to work nicely. Since this version of the mod is using my modified weapons pack and the texture.ll file is a bit full, there's of course texture curruption. So far I'm running the Terran side with nearly all slots filled but the R2 race is still the Taiidan with a few green blocks here and there. The P-races are also of the small green cubes variety to help combat the texture curruption. So far however the Terran/Vasudan side (R1) is working fine and I've balanced it so that fighters are very important (just like the FS games) and cap ship can take loads of punishment...and deal it out too. There's no Y-axis movement for the caps so that the ships look and act more like huge cap-ships in battle. Weapon points are more closely related to the FS2 game so unit placement is essential. I actually have this version of the mod planned out so that the map isn't filled with loads of cap-ships, instead any cap-ship is an important one. Build times are long and build prices are of course quite high, except for fighters, which also need to be looked after (now equipped with repair systems and more accurate weapon layouts such as light repeating guns, rapid fire emp guns and heavy rounds). I've also replaced the cloakgenerator with the Vasudan destroyer (can't remember the names) but it has issues when attacking targets...it has to get real close even though the cloak field radius is quite large. The Iceni frigate (was originally the resource controller) is also in the gravwell slot now and its works quite nicely. The lodding of the original release was a bit ropey and the poly count in general was farely low so I've decided to negate some of the lods here and there, except for the fighters.

Anyway, enough of all that. That's my progress so far. If you think you can help that would be great, especially with the textures.ll file. I could finish the R1 side and send it over some time to let you have a go. If you think its worth the bother we could then sort the rest out. The works already there, it just needs to be cleaned up a bit, which I'm well on the way of doing. While I'm here, here's more screenies...

I've gotten very good at dealing with the .LL file and would be happy to fix any problems it has. If you can upload what you have and send me a link I'd be happy to go through it.

Well while the modding community has lept onto the HW2 band-wagon, I still prefer HW1...shock, horror!!! HW2 is of course lovely but so much is different to me, mostly of course the modding capabilities. Not everyone has a copy Maya lying about or a machine that can shit well over 5-6000 poly for a ship the size of a corvette, nor do all people have the time and patients to learn a nearly completely different format of modding, especiaaly when its meant to be 'mod' friendly. HW1 for me still has potential and I find it sad that many have left their own HW projects to work on HW2, which I found to be a bit of a disappointment. Yes there are many limits to HW1 but isn't modding meant to be about finding a way round those problems? Anyway, the main point is I'm too lazy to learn and bother with HW2 modding

Once i've sorted a few things with the HW1 FS2 mod, I'll send you a copy, Zeelich and cheers for the offer. I've also been contemplating designing some P3 race ships based on the FS2 'Ancients'. I'm sure I can manipulate the Ancients 'jump-gate' textures to texture any new vessels.

I think it's nice that you're sticking to HW1. I mean, you've got the basics down already, so that you "just" need to make the models (for Dark Star) and you're pretty much done with it.

As for the FS mod you're working on, it looks great as well. I hope you get permission from the original maker(s) to release what you've done.

Rock-rock on! If I racll correctly, one guy made this mod origionally. I think he just exported the origional models and textures from Freespace. Anyway good job there
