1st problem is finding out what is out and about and what to avoid.......

Nfo sites and scene site are always the best places to find out what you can get from newsgroups or leech from irc.......

http://www.theisonews.com/
http://www.nforce.nl/
http://www.scene.org/ (music)

After you find some thing you like ....now you have to get it ..the most popular 2 methods ( bar file sharering , would not recomend FS ) is

A. newsgroups
or
b. irc

A. news groups are a big step at first so better to use some thing like easy news till you get the hang of (£6 a month)

http://www.easynews.com/
This way you can use it web based rather than have to dl a reader ( which you can)....they have a pretty good step by step guide..., But if you want a reader, news group readers there are a ton of again personal preference.

http://www.speedbit.com
Use a dl accelerator like DAP very handy indeed for scheduling downloads.

B. now irc is a bit different you can dl a number of irc clients ..this one is purely preference....but you have to know where are the channels with what you want to leech.
use irc spy for it
http://www.ircspy.com/
and connect striaght from there

now once you have it most things come split up into rar...you will need win rar....to un rar the files into a image file which you can ethier burn to cd or create a virtual drive... unrar is easy just point it at the first rar and it will do the rest..

now you will notice some .par files among your .rar files these files are incase you have any missing rar files or damaged rar files.......now if your missing a rar file or have a damaged one for a game I would recommend you go and dl it again ...par files are good for movies and audio...but never work right with games.

The ambition to be a politician should bar that person from ever becoming one

I signed up to ClaraNews for my Usenet access. The bastards billed me for a year in advance, but £100ish doesn't seem so bad when I think about everything I've downloaded - their message retention is excellent.

They don't offer a web-based service so I use Agent Newsreader which does the job pretty well.

I use Newzbin's free indexing service to find the things I want. It's by no means comprehensive, but pretty damn good all the same.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to newsgroups, but here's what I (think I) know:

Usenet is hard to define, but it's a ditributed message system. It's organised into newsgroups which are accessed by a newsreader.

I've been using a free newsreader to look around, and see what there is. alt.binaries.cd.image etc etc.

Is this the right way to go about it, and is there more than one alt.binaries.cd.image 'out there'? Am I missing a superset of newsgroups somewhere? EG, is there a blueyonder alt.binaries.cd.image AND a freeserve alt.binaries.cd.image etc etc?

Right. I'll try to have a look around for some good things. It's suprisingly difficult to find something useful, but I guess it gets easier with practice. IRC dcc seems easier to do, I've been getting some sucess with that too...

The key with Usenet is checking the newsgroups everyday... although what you want probably won't be there at any given time, over the course of a month it's surprising how much software cycles through...
